1. The short answer
To rent a car in Morocco you need three things: a valid driving licence held for at least two years, a valid passport or Moroccan national ID card, and a bank card in your own name. That is the whole list. Everything below is detail on each one, and on the situations where a rental gets refused at the counter.
Most refusals happen for reasons people do not expect — a licence issued eighteen months ago, a card in a spouse's name, a passport that expires during the rental period. None of them are exotic. All of them are avoidable if you know beforehand.
2. Your driving licence
Your national licence is accepted in Morocco. You do not need a Moroccan licence, and you do not need to convert anything.
Three conditions apply:
- It must be valid — not expired, not provisional, not suspended.
- You must have held it for at least two years. This is the requirement people most often miss. A licence issued last year will be refused, even if you are 40 years old and have driven for two decades on a previous licence from another country.
- You must bring the original. A photo on your phone, a photocopy, or a digital licence in a national app is not accepted at handover. Bring the physical card.
If your licence was issued in Arabic or in Latin script, it is read directly. If it uses another alphabet entirely — Cyrillic, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai — you will need an International Driving Permit alongside it, for the simple reason that nobody at the counter or at a police checkpoint can read it otherwise.
3. Do you need an International Driving Permit?
Legally, no — Morocco accepts foreign national licences for visitors. But whether you should carry one depends on where yours was issued.
If your licence is written in the Latin alphabet, you almost certainly do not need an IDP. If it is not, bring one. An IDP is not a licence — it is an official translation, and it is only valid alongside the original.
In practice: licences from France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia and most of Latin America are read without difficulty. Licences from Russia, Ukraine, Greece, China, Japan, Korea, Thailand and the Gulf states in Arabic-only format are where an IDP saves you an argument.
An IDP costs very little and is issued by the motoring authority in your own country — you cannot obtain one once you have arrived in Morocco. If you think you might need it, sort it before you fly.
4. Passport or national ID
Moroccan residents present their CIN (carte d'identité nationale). Visitors present their passport — the same one they entered the country on.
One detail that catches people out: your passport must remain valid for the whole rental period, not merely on the day you collect the car. A passport expiring mid-rental is a problem, because the rental contract is tied to an identity document that stops being valid halfway through.
Rental companies photograph or photocopy this document. That is normal and required. What you are entitled to ask is how long they keep it — at VITI CAR the copies are deleted at the end of the rental unless a legal obligation requires otherwise, which you can read in full in our privacy policy.
5. Bank card
You need a credit or debit card in your own name, matching the name on the licence and the ID. A card belonging to your partner, your parent or your employer will not be accepted, however reasonable that feels in the moment.
This is where the deposit question usually arrives. Most Moroccan rental companies block a security deposit on that card — commonly between 3,000 and 10,000 MAD, sometimes taken in cash. The money is unavailable to you for the duration, and sometimes for weeks afterwards.
A deposit is the single largest sum you hand over, and it is the one that most often goes missing with informal operators. Ask for the amount in writing, how it is taken, and when it is released. If a company will not answer that in a message, that is your answer.

6. Age and licence-held requirements
The minimum age to rent a car in Morocco is generally 21. Some companies apply a young-driver surcharge below 25, and some set a higher minimum for their most expensive vehicles.

7. Additional drivers
Anyone who will drive the car must be declared and must present the same three documents — licence, ID, and their own identification at handover. This is not administrative fussiness. An undeclared driver is not covered by the insurance, which means that if they have an accident, the cover does not apply and the full cost falls on you.

8. What actually gets checked at handover
The document check itself takes about five minutes. What happens is:
- Your licence is examined for validity and issue date.
- Your passport or CIN is checked against the name on the licence.
- Your bank card is checked for the same name.
- Both documents are photographed or copied for the rental file.
- You sign a rental contract naming the vehicle, the dates, the mileage allowance and the conditions.
Read the contract before signing it. Specifically: the daily mileage allowance, what happens if you exceed it, the fuel policy, and the insurance excess. Those four lines are where unexpected costs live. If the contract is only offered verbally, stop.

9. Why rentals get refused
In rough order of frequency:
- Licence held under two years. The most common by a wide margin, and the one nobody anticipates.
- Card in someone else's name. Booking on a partner's card and arriving with it is a refused rental.
- Only a photocopy or a phone photo of the licence, with the original left at the hotel.
- Passport expiring during the rental.
- An unreadable licence with no IDP, where the alphabet is the obstacle.
